#SNL50 Sketch of the Day - February 1, 2025
Jane, Laraine & Gilda and Madeline Kahn in "Slumber Party" (1976)
Phil Dyess-Nugent wrote a very fine article about this sketch and the entire Madeline Kahn-hosted episode from 1976 for The AV Club, so I don’t need to go into detail. During Saturday Night (Live)’s first season, the show had a mere three writers of the female persuasion, notably Marilyn Suzanne Miller, who penned this sketch and tons of other seriocomic classics that unfolded more like short plays.
“Slumber Party” brilliantly considers the idea of sex from the perspective of four little girls who rightly find it gross. There hadn’t been anything like this on television before, and there probably hasn’t been since. At least nothing as funny and well-written.

What the bumpers for the Madeline Kahn-hosted Saturday Night episode looked like on my pathetic portable black-and-white set.
